How does scoring work in a padel Americano?

Last updated 27 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

In a padel Americano every rally is one point, whoever serves. A match ends when the two scores add up to the agreed total, usually 24, so 14-10 and 12-12 are both finished matches. Each player adds their side's score to their own total, and the highest total after the last round wins.

How does one match end?

Agree the total before the first round, say 24. Every rally is one point, whoever served, and both scores run together: 1-0, 1-1, 2-1. The match ends when they add up to 24.

Neither side has to reach a target. 14-10, 13-11, 18-6 and 12-12 are all finished 24-point matches. With an even total a match can be a draw: at 12-12 all four players add 12 points.

What do I write down?

Both scores, next to the four names. Every total in the final table comes from these numbers.

CourtSide ASide BScore
1Priya and MarcoLena and Arjun14-10
2Sofia and TomAisha and Diego11-13

What do players get?

Each player adds their side's score to their own total. The losing side keeps its points too.

A 14-10 padel Americano match played to 24 points: Priya and Marco each bank 14 points, Lena and Arjun each bank 10, and the match ends because the two scores add up to 24.
A 14-10 result: 14 points each for the winners, 10 each for the losers.

So losing 11-13 is worth far more than losing 6-18.

16, 21, 24 or 32 points?

PointsTime per roundFeels like
16about 11 minutesquick, lots of rounds
21about 14 minutesa classic number, but odd
24about 16 minutesthe usual choice
32about 21 minuteslong, competitive matches

With 16, 24 or 32, both sides serve the same number of points. With 21, one side serves 12 and the other 9 (why that matters).

Rally points or games?

Most Americanos use rally points, which are quicker and easier to explain to beginners. Groups who prefer normal padel scoring (15, 30, 40) play each match as a short set, say first to 4 games, and the table adds up games won.

Next: who serves when.

Questions people ask

How do you score a padel Americano?

Every rally is one point. The match ends when the two scores add up to the agreed total, such as 24. Each player adds their side's score to their own running total.

Can an Americano match end in a draw?

Yes, with an even total. A 24-point match can end 12-12, and all four players add 12 points. It counts as a draw for wins and losses.

What is the best number of points for an Americano?

24 is the most common. A round takes about 16 minutes and each side serves 12. Use 16 for short sessions and 32 for long, competitive ones.

Do you play deuce or advantage in an Americano?

Not with rally points. Every rally is one point until the total is reached. If your group prefers normal padel scoring, play games instead, and the match goes to the first side to win a set number of games.

What do I write down after each match?

Both scores, for example 14-10, next to the four names. That is all you need to work out every player's total later.
